Today I received my weekly dose of Ann Coulter, who I think is a nut but find myself unable to stop reading her bold faced commentary! Do not get me wrong, I am decidedly to the right in my political leanings, but I am not as bold as my girl, Ann! She likes to get out there and mix it up with her opponents and I have to admire her backbone! I on the other hand do not like to mix it up with the natives who seem to come out of the cracks when the word conservative is mentioned!
I bring this up because I took a look into the comments on Ann Coulter’s newsletter, and was truly appalled at the wild and even vicious comments from writers on both side of the political divide. And there is a divide that has become a ravine in our political system that is reflected in the opinions of everyday Americans. About three-fourths of the comments were about other issues that did not relate at all to the newsletter article which was a tribute to Ann's mother who had died a few days before!
The writers who frequent these forums and take such delight in scorning the opposition, cannot possibly be so rude and annoying when met face to face. The anonymity offered by a catchy handle and well chosen avatar seems to offer the opportunity to leave behind all restraint! No topic is safe from these rude internet warriors! Browsing through the comments about a song I loved from Flogging Molly, the internet warriors were out in full force. They forgot about the song and insulted America, conservatives, Stargate Universe, and everyone in the thread who disagreed with them. Unbelievable!
Today something wonderful happened all across America and most of the media missed it! Americans of many different political persuasions came together in over 600 cities across the country to express with one voice their unhappiness with the direction this country is taking. There was no violence, no civil unrest, just regular people standing up to say that they do not like what is happening in this country!
And yes, you guessed it the forums and bloggers were johnny-on-the-spot to do their vicious name calling, vulgar insinuations, and down right lies about what was taking place today! One network actually did some name calling and allowed worse than usual vulgar language by the commentators.

This battleground is not only in the political arena. I am a religion writer so occasionally I look into the religious forums and guess what? Yep! You got it! The battle is joined! I do understand that some people live for debate, but I do not understand why anyone who hates Christianity, Conservatives, or Peanut Butter would want to get into the mix and fight to the death about an opinion or idea in which you have no hope of influencing the outcome or your opponent. There is no meaningful discussion, just bitter wrangling, vindictiveness and insults that are beyond degrading to both sides. Such discussions are an exercise in futility and I do not get it!
The religion forums on HubPages are a place you enter at your own peril. To be honest that is true of most of the religion forums I have visited. Honesty compels me to admit that many Christians believe that the command from the Apostle Paul to contend for the faith is one that should be taken to extremes. While I will stand firm in what I believe, it serves no purpose to take every opportunity to engage in an all out brawl with people you have no hope of bringing round to your point of view. Jesus Christ commissioned the church to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Jesus Christ was very specific in his instructions.

My advice to believers...leave them alone. You cannot win because although they think they are logical, they are not. They believe that we have mental issues that lead us to be believers, or that we are in mortal feal of hell. You will never be able to convince most of these people otherwise so best to leave it alone. Find people closer to home who genuinely need and want what you have to give.

the same time it must be horrible to live with such bitterness in your
heart.

I think it is cruel when others becoming heartless and inhumane, we have sluggers wherever we go. But I do have to say that the 600 who came together was an interesting story, nothing like having a Boston Tea Party and making history in the new millenium. I certainly hope that it works.:)

Smireles, good Hub. You're right about people feeling freer to be nasty when not face to face. I write pretty non-controversial material; and much of what I write is either neutral or else along the lines of "how precious children are" - and yet even I've gotten some amazingly nasty remarks!! :) First people make up what some writer "must be", and then they attack because they imagine what the writer "must be". It's kind of funny and usually amazing, but who the heck knows what must go on in some people's minds. :)
Ann , Rush ,Laura ,and the Kieth Olbermanns of the world are first and foremost entertainers and capitalists . So we have to bear In mind that we have to take what they say with a grain of salt . Unfortunately there are those who take whatever the talking heads say as gospel . And that Is where the problems start .
I am kinda right of center , because even though I am far from liberal they have a couple of points I think are legitimate .
But I never thought growing up that believing In God and Jesus Christ would somehow make me a looneytoon of some sort . It just shows me how far from grace we have fallen to me.
I am in India, and it would be wrong for me to make a comment here about your nation-wide tea parties and political happenings in the US. It was, however, fairly well reported and discussed in the media here. After all the fate of the world's biggest economy and the leader of the free world affects all of us.
My country is now having its General Elections, but with the geographical spread, the inefficiency, and problems with law and order, the whole process of voting and counting takes well over a month. Since many months now, the political rhetoric here has been extremely shrill and high pitched - and we have all sorts in the fray, from the extreme right wing to even downright communist parties.
All the vicious noise and name calling is hurtful to the ears of decent by-standers. But I think we have to learn to live with it. What else can one do? There is what is called the freedom of expressing one's views.
Smireles, I cannot stop laughing at your comment above on Sarah Palin and Hilary Clinton. I am not sure of either one's competence, but you are right: Even if they had tried, they could not possibly have done worse than the previous three Presidents at least!
