An American Thanksgiving
63
This week Americans will join their families for a feast that includes turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, and many other goodies that make the day a culinary success. While these foods are part of the celebration, they are the symbol of new beginnings and gratitude to God for his blessings. Every year we take this moment to reflect on past and current blessings.
The first Thanksgiving took place in 1621 between the pilgrims and the local Native American tribes. Thanksgiving did not become a national holiday until much later in our history. It was not until after the Revolutionary war that Thanksgiving became an American celebration. It was in 1863 that Abraham Lincoln declared that the last Thursday in November would be celebrated and Thanksgiving became a national holiday.
The date of Thanksgiving has bounced around between the third Thursday and the fourth Thursday of November. President Roosevelt favored the third Thursday of November so people would have more time to shop for Christmas, but in 1941 Congress made the fourth Thursday of November the official national holiday.
We have recently been told that we are not a Christian nation. Unfortunately, the ordinary people of the country do not know that and will be giving thanks to God on this special day.
I know that many people observe the formalities without considering the deep roots that this celebration has in our society. We are a thankful people. This has been our strength. We have been blessed because of this thankfulness.
Take a moment during your feasting to reflect on the blessings that God has given to you and your family this year. Even the poorest among us will be better for showing a thankful spirit.
