Snow Day In Humble

Snow days in Texas are few and far between. We vividly recall the few days when snow stayed on the ground for more than a few days. Usually we can count the times the snow stays on the ground on one hand. Today was such a day. It started snowing around six o'clock in the morning with a few flurries and and by noon the ground was covered.

It was not long before the kids were throwing snowballs and making snow men. This is rare fun for those of us in the sunny south.

Fun in The Snow

Texas Snow Through The Years

Although I cannot remember the day I was born in February 1951 my mother tells me that there was snow and ice on the ground as she went downtown to the hospital not once but twice to give birth on that cold winter night!.

I do remember the snow in 1971 that stayed on the ground and was about six inches deep for a whole day! It did not last long. My young son loved it!

December 1989 was a sad year because my brother was killed before Christmas,  and we had snow on the ground for his funeral for three days.To me the snow that year was a gift from God. The extreme cold blanketed the earth and seemed totally appropriate for the sadness we felt.

Today we had snow that lasted for about eight hours which is really unusual and gave everyone a lot of pleasure. Of course we know that in the north the snow is not a source of fun but something that can really be a danger to the lives of people. And yet, it is a treat and something we never forget.

We only got about an hour's worth of heavy snowfall...nothing stuck to the ground. *sigh*

And now you Texians know what living in Detroit feels like and besides I think the earth has finally turn too many times and so much even that the weather has switch areas cold where it is usally hot and hot where it is normally cold.

It does seem strange that we are starting to get snow so often. It was really exciting and the school children were ecstatic. I live a half block from the school and I could hear the children screaming and laughing from my front door. It was truly amazing! Thanks both of you for your comments. Oh yes, I really could not live like this and you guys in Detroit have my admiration!

Now where is that global warming? Lovely pictures and lovely hub. In Jan. 1975, we were traveling to CA and there was snow in Abilene. It was so slippery we were really frightened but we made it to El Paso. One of God's little blessings.

Lovely snow and neighborhood! It has only snowed a couple times here in Florida in 25 years that I've lived here, but I visit my daughter in Atlanta and have seen some snow there over the years.

It was a lovely and rare experience we will treasure for many years. Although the snow was heavy it was not really icy or slippery where we live. It was just right!

Aha! Another nearby resident with snow event photos of yesterday. Would you like to link our hubs? You took many great photos. We had company so did not take the actual snow falling. Should have excused myself for some picture taking moments. Nice job! Take a look at mine (titled Wow! Snow in Houston, Texas!) and let me know...

Hi Peggy W. I left you a message on your hub! I already put up the link. Your hub was great. I also had company but it was ok since it was my sister who thought it great fun to laugh at us! She lives in Missouri where it snows every year. They lived through the great ice storm last year that shut down her part of the country for weeks! Thanks.

Thank you. We do get snow here in Humble and Houston but not usually to stick on the ground like this. This was one of those rare days that happen years apart! Although...in 1973 or 4 it snowed three times! Amazing!

Actually, I don't mind the snow in North Dakota (as long as I'm not the one shoveling!) I do, however, mind the minus 5 degree temps which feels like 20 below when the winds blowing.

I was happy to add your link to mine about snow in Houston. I realize that the folks up North wouldn't think much of our snow down here...but the rarity makes it special and memorable. Ha! Who knows...it may be many years before we see something similar again!

We had some crazy snow in Abilene a few times in the 80s but it was infrequent, but no stranger to snow. You know the saying, if you don't like the weather in Texas, wait 5 minutes and it will change. Lovely hub.

Here is Florida we can count on one hand the number of time it snowed. At last count I counted 3 snow flakes all fell in December and January. LOL

Great post Made me wish I was there. Yes it is rough living here in sunny Florida. But somone has to do it.

God Bless
