Trivia
According to the World of Hummingbirds, Native American cultures have many stories and ceremonial uses for hummingbirds. The hummingbird is believed to be the spreader of life in the Taino tradition. Legend states that hummingbirds were once flies that the Sun Father transformed into little birds. They are considered the symbol of rebirth and the Taino Nation calls their warriors the Colibri (Hummingbird) Warriors.
THE HUMMINGBIRD SOCIETY
The Hummingbird Society was founded in 1996 by Dr. Ross H. Hawkins whose love of the species sent him on a quest to preserve the species and develop educational programs to promote greater public understanding and appreciation of hummingbirds.
In 2006 hummingbirds 28 species of a total of 329 hummingbird species were ranked by Birdlife International to be in one of these three categories: critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable.

Anna’s Hummingbird is one of three species that are permanent residents of the United States and Canada. Other’s are Allen’s and Costa’s. Anna’s Hummingbird may also be found in numerous areas such as: Alaska, Arizona, California, Missouri, Montana, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and British Columbia (resident on Vancouver Island).
Adult males have metallic green backs with dark rose-red crown and gorget with a grayish breast. Adult females have a green back, grayish-white breast, white throat with red spots and white tips on outer tail feathers. Young of both sexes resemble adult female.
Hummingbirds are beautiful creatures and very delicate. Their wings move so fast it is almost impossible to capture the image of them when in flight. They are the only bird species able to hover in one place. They love the nectar of flowers and their long beak makes it possible for them to get into large flowers. They will drink from sugar syrup feeders although they are easily frightened.

Smireless, I love humming birds and have a feeder. We have had more this year than ever and I can sit at my kitchen table and watch them along with the other bird at my regular feeder and bird bath. I thought your article was terrific. Voted up!

Excellent photos! Thank you! This was a delight!
Hummingbirds are a fascinating creature. They are so tiny, beautiful, and beat those tiny little wings so quickly. Beautiful pictures. Thanks for sharing.
Your photos are among the most beautiful I've had the pleasure of seeing. I caught something on still film that so far I've not seen on any web page - two hummingbirds on the ground - fighting to the death. I'm at a loss as to what to do with these shots as apparently publications wish to display them as 'gentle' souls when in fact, they are not. I am a professional photographer and have NOT posted them on the web as of yet. Do you think there would be an interest?
Thanks for your response. I know what you mean about posting them to the web - I'm a professional fire(fighter) photographer. I posted some - and WHAM! They were taken here and there. They even 'thanked' me. So that's part of my hestitation. Again, tho, you do have the most beautiful hummingbird shots - ever!
Aren't they beautiful!!
Wonder Hub. I love the pictures! Hummingbirds are a favorite of mine. Thanks for sharing!

Smireless, Beautiful! Great photographs, Thank you for sharing, Peace & Blessings!
I have hummingbird everything. My mom and dad always had therm in their yard a few feet from Mom's swing and she wore the big loose moo moos around the house with big bright flowers and they would come right up under her chin apparently going on color but moving on when there was no nectar. When dad died I had fake hummingbirds mixed in his flowers and that got mom collecting and finally she came to live with me her last years and although she died last June I still cannot pass one up and they are all so beautiful. Really enjoyed your hub.
