Homeless in America
It is an unfortunate truth that many people in our cities have no place to live other than the streets. They also have no food, and the truth about some of the organizations that most of us believe are helping these people, is that they do not do enough. Some of these organizations offer a place to sleep for a price.
The stories told by some of these street people are truly heart breaking. You or your organization can make a difference by designating a day every week or two to regularly feed these needy people.
According to a December 2000 report of the US conference of mayors between 700,000 and 2 million people sleep on the streets on any given night. At least 44% of the homeless are single men while 36% are families with children. Most of them work at least part time but are unable to make enough money to provide a place to live and food too.
You can make a difference in the lives of a few of these people by making and delivering food during the week or on the week end at safe areas where these people meet. A few simple ingredients you can purchase for around $35 or $40 will feed fifty people.
Here is what you will need:
9 dozen eggs
15 pounds potatoes
100 flour tortillas
1 stick butter
canola oil
salt pepper
4/25 sheet boxes foil sheets
ice chest
2 skillets and 2 spoons or spatulas
2 casserole dishes
2 round pizza pans, work space
2 people
Working together, one person peels and dices potatoes into 1/2 inch squares while the other breaks the eggs into a large bowl. Set up your work station with the casserole dishes and make a space to roll the potatoes and eggs into the flour tortillas.
Place the tortillas on the pizza pans, cover with foil and warm in the oven at 300 degrees until the first batch of food is ready to be assembled. Each person takes a duty. One cooks while the other makes the breakfast tacos. Continue cooking until all food is prepared. Stack the breakfast tacos in the ice chest and in about 2 hours you are ready to deliver your food.
This is a very easy budget friendly project that will be very helpful to those needy people who are hungry and in need.

So often when we think of homeless people we subconsciously think of third world countries. You are absolutely right, Ann! Until I began working with my organization I was totally convinced that there could not be hunger in this country because of the food stamp (in Texas Lone Star) program. I was wrong.
Smireles, Homelessness is heartbreaking. I think a lot of people think the homeless are worthless druggies and alcoholics but that isn't true. I really have concern for the children. This was a great article because it gave you step by step a way to make a difference.
Thank you, Pamela99! In Houston we have some homeless people on the street who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina, and that have never recovered. We met two people who lost their entire family during that storm. Their lives have never been the same!

I don't think enough can be said about homelessness in America. It exists, and as your figures show, it exists in large numbers.
I think it's also worth saying that many are hungry even though they might not be homeless. Our food stamp program does not always provide what it should.
Thumbs up for doing your part to put this tragedy in front of those who are uninformed about hunger and homelessness in America.
I strongly feel that we need to raise awareness of this problem. I am embarrassed that I did not know about this or take the time to know about this problem sooner. My hat is off to all the people who are passionate about working with and helping these people.

It's is a wonderful thing to be able to actually physically help these people, and not simply donate to some international organisation, which will use your money as IT deems fit! (some of it going to high salaries). This article has really brought another view of America to me. Thanks.

Your are making still another great contribution toward helping the homeless with this hub, Smireless. Offering food and other necessities through such organizations as the Compassion Ministry is important. However, I believe the homelessness problem won't be solved until the government step up and provides the resources necessary to solve it.
I agree with you somewhat. Some of these people are not capable of caring for themselves. The government needs to care for these people. Those who can move back into society should be offered opportunities. Coming back from homelessness takes time and patience from the caregivers. Even those who desire to reestablish their lives find it takes months to access the resources needed with help from caring individuals and organizations.
When people lose everything right down to their identification cards some organizations refuse to let them have a bed for the night. These people must have assistance to eat, sleep, and obtain ss cards, id cards, etc. before they can move on to legitimate work opportunities and financial independence.
I was shocked when I became involved in the Compassion Ministry to learn the amount of red tape involved in rehabilitating people. It is not surprising that most give up.

Homelessness is a horrible situation that afflicts millions of people around the world. There is a systemic problem which creates this situation for a large proportion of homeless people, those who do not choose to be living rough. I know that some do.
Feeding the hungry, especially the children, is essential, and so is working to change the system that creates homelessness.
