When The Mind Says Goodbye

Alzheimer's Increases as the Population Ages

Alzheimer's has become the fastest growing disease in the country as the Baby Boomer population enters the golden years. During the next two years the oldest members of this group will turn age 65. At present there are 5.3 million people being treated for this condition and another 500,000 are expected to be diagnosed by 2010.

Alzheimer's is a brain disorder that destroys brain cells and works progressively to reduce body functions until the patient loses all self awareness and most body functions cease. Many people have difficulty swallowing and eating as the disease progresses.

It may be difficult to receive a diagnosis because Alzheimer's has many symptoms that mimic other diseases and mental conditions. Researchers studying Alzheimers found that cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF), which are soluble proteins that were injected into a patient brought about immediate improvement in the cognitive powers of the patient. You can check out the research study at the Science Daily link below. While such research is hopeful there are no medications or product on the market at present known to reverse the effects of the disease.

There are a number of support groups available for people with Alzheimers. Find a local support group and connect with people who understand your illness and can offer help and assistance.

It is important to note that the caregivers of ALZHEIMER'S patients are equally at risk. The stress of watching a loved family member fade away brings on serious illnesses in many caregivers such as immune disorders, new onset heart disease, and new onset hypertension. Caregivers must seek help in their battle with this disease and should find support groups who can offer assistance. Get the facts and get help.

Smireless, they'd better think of something to do about this terrible condition soon. With the aging Boomers, there will be so many people suffering dementia, the health care field will be swamped.
